The brilliant red brick of the buildings around Sledmere House and the vivid greens of the surrounding countryside create a sense of magic unfolding along the winding road. In summer 1997, David Hockney was often to be found driving across the Yorkshire Wolds to visit his sick friend, Jonathan Silver. Jonathan urged David to paint Yorkshire, and beautiful oils began to
